A square-foot takeoff is the starting point, but board size, openings, layout, waste, finish level, height, and access determine the final estimate.
Enter gross wall and ceiling area, subtract openings, and choose a sheet size. The calculator rounds sheets up and keeps board, labor, and finishing extras separate.
Sheets = (net surface area × waste factor) ÷ sheet area, rounded up.
Estimating checks
- Use longer sheets when they reduce seams without creating handling problems.
- Treat high ceilings, arches, soffits, abuse board, and specialty assemblies separately.
- Price finish level, corner bead, protection, and cleanup explicitly.
Common questions
Should I subtract every opening?
Large openings usually deserve subtraction. Small openings may not because cutting and finishing can offset saved material.
Does labor per square foot include finishing?
It includes whatever you place in the rate. Define your internal rate consistently.
Why use a waste percentage?
Cuts, damage, layout, and unusable remnants mean purchased board normally exceeds net area.
